Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC)

RCC has become a trusted choice for heavy-duty applications due to its strength, low cost, and minimal maintenance requirements.

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC)

At A.G. Peltz Group, we specialize in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), a paving solution that combines the durability of traditional concrete with the speed and efficiency of asphalt placement.

RCC is widely used in applications that require strength, durability, and efficiency under heavy loads and extreme conditions.

What Makes RCC Different?

RCC stands apart from conventional concrete pavements in both its composition and its construction process.

  • Mix Design: RCC uses a stiff, no-slump concrete mix made of aggregates, cement, water, and admixtures, achieving high compressive and flexural strengths.  Unlike traditional concrete, RCC's dry mix allows for faster placement without sacrificing strength.
  • Placement: Using high-density asphalt-type paving equipment, RCC is placed in lifts ranging from 4 to 10 inches thick in a single lift.  It is compacted with vibratory rollers to achieve density and strength without requiring steel reinforcement, forms, or hand finishing.
  • Surface Options: While RCC does not naturally produce a broom-finished surface like conventional concrete, RCC surfaces can be troweled to improve surface aesthetics and provide a finish similar to conventional PCC.   RCC can be diamond ground or covered with an asphalt cap to meet smoothness and rideability requirements.

RCC at a Glance

  • Strength: Average 28-day compressive strengths range from 5,000-8,000 PSI and flexural strengths range from 600-900 PSI.
  • Efficiency: Fast placement reduces construction timelines.
  • Durability: Long-lasting resistance to heavy loads, weather extremes, and spills.
  • Cost Savings: Lower material costs and minimal maintenance requirements result in lower lift cycle cost.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of heavy-duty applications.

Pioneering RCC Construction

At A.G. Peltz Group, we are industry leaders in Roller Compacted Concrete construction. Our team has worked on some of the largest and most recognized RCC projects in the country, including working with household name clients like Walmart, Coca Cola, Honda, Hibbetts, and Lowes, to name a few.   In addition, by collaborating with equipment manufacturers to develop and refine machines specifically for RCC applications, A.G. Peltz Group has been recognized by the American Concrete Paving Association a record 11 times for paving excellence during their annual awards banquet.

If you need a durable, cost-effective pavement solution that can expedite your project schedule, Roller Compacted Concrete is the pavement of choice.

Why Choose RCC?

RCC is designed for projects where strength, speed of construction, and cost-effectiveness are key. It delivers significant advantages over other paving methods:

  • Fast Construction: RCC can be placed and compacted quickly, minimizing downtime and disruption.
  • Cost-Effective: RCC is often competitive with HMA on an initial cost basis and is usually the lowest life cycle cost pavement alternative.
  • Durability: RCC resists heavy loads, freeze-thaw cycles, and fuel or hydraulic fluid spills. It will not rut, push, or soften under extreme temperatures.
  • Low Maintenance: Long-term durability eliminates issues like potholes, rutting, and frequent repairs.

RCC's unique properties make it an ideal choice for projects where long-term performance and minimal maintenance are critical.

Applications of Roller Compacted Concrete

RCC is widely used in applications that require strength, durability, and efficiency under heavy loads and extreme conditions. Common applications include:

  • Ports and Intermodal Facilities: Resist bending and cracking under heavy repeated loads imposed by stacked containers and yard handling equipment, reducing costly downtime.
  • Industrial and Distribution Sites: Ideal for facilities that require strong, low-maintenance surfaces to support heavy equipment.
  • Transportation Infrastructure: Allows quick return to traffic on secondary highways, intersections, shoulders, ramps, turn lanes, and access roads.
  • Manufacturing & Industrial: Provides durable surfaces for heavy equipment, trucks, and materials storage areas.

Additional secondary uses include reservoir liners, embankment dam raises, and airfield maintenance areas.
