Over a four-year period, A.G. Peltz Group executed a comprehensive Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) paving project at the Alabama Power Company’s General Services Complex in Varnons, Alabama. The project encompassed the installation of 240,000 square yards of RCC pavement in varying thicknesses of 7 inches, 10 inches, and 12 inches. The phased approach ensured minimal disruption to the facility’s operations, with Phase I completed in the fall of 2018, Phase II in 2019, and the final phase in September 2021.

The General Services Complex is subjected to substantial loads from various parts, machinery, and mobile equipment. The existing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) sections were exhibiting distress and necessitated frequent, costly maintenance. Seeking a durable, economical, and swiftly deployable pavement alternative, Alabama Power identified Roller Compacted Concrete as the optimal solution.

Given the facility’s operational status, meticulous site planning was crucial. A.G. Peltz Group collaborated closely with Alabama Power to develop a paving strategy that minimized site disruption and downtime. In several instances, equipment was returned to the finished RCC surfaces immediately upon achieving design strengths. The existing asphalt was milled at varied depths by subcontractor Kelly Construction to prepare the site adequately.

The RCC placement involved both single-lift (7-inch and 10-inch) and dual-lift (12-inch) applications, utilizing ABG Titan 8820 pavers with paving widths ranging from 14 to 24.5 feet. Early-entry saws were employed to cut both centerline longitudinal and transverse joints, ensuring structural integrity. To enhance surface aesthetics around the Alabama Power buildings, trowel finishing was applied during the second and third phases. Material suppliers for the project included Vulcan Materials, Argos, Couch Aggregates, and Dunn Construction, ensuring high-quality inputs for optimal pavement performance.

This project exemplifies A.G. Peltz Group’s commitment to delivering durable and efficient paving solutions tailored to the specific needs of industrial facilities.
