Rattlesnake Hollow Ash Pond Crest Raise
Efficient RCC Construction for Dam Infrastructure
The Rattlesnake Hollow Ash Pond, located in north-central Alabama, was originally constructed in the 1950s with a rock fill dam to provide ash storage for a fossil-fueled electric generating plant. The dam underwent a major renovation in 1979, with a crest raise of approximately 17 m (55 feet), bringing the total height of the dam to approximately 44 m (145 feet). In 2007, after an evaluation of options, the decision was made to raise the existing dam 6 m (20 feet) using a steep-sided upstream section consisting of roller compacted concrete (RCC).
A.G. Peltz Group, LLC successfully produced and placed 12,750 cubic yards of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) in 9-inch lifts using advanced paving equipment. By leveraging this innovative method, the construction team minimized the use of traditional formwork, significantly accelerating the construction schedule while maintaining precision and quality.
The use of paving equipment not only streamlined the process but also exemplified RCC’s versatility in large-scale water resources projects. This approach highlights the efficiency and cost-effectiveness that RCC offers for demanding applications such as dam construction.
